DIRECTOR
The Cantilon Choral Society anticipates the need for a dynamic Artistic Director to lead the artistic vision for the organization and to conduct the senior touring and recording ensemble, the Cantilon Chamber Choir. We are searching for a talented, energetic individual who is passionate about children and committed to artistic excellence and excellence in music education.
Cantilon Choirs is a family of community choirs that encompasses singers of all ages (4-adult) in three levels of choirs. These choirs have been a vibrant and high profile part of the Edmonton musical community since 1999 and strive to provide a choral program exemplifying artistic and education excellence for children, youth and young adults. The organization involves over 180 singers and has a yearly operating budget of up to $500,000. (www.cantilonchoirs.ca)
The Cantilon Chamber Choir is the primary touring and recording ensemble of the Cantilon program. This choir has consistently been awarded top honours in international, national and local competitions.
Position profile:
The successful candidate must be an outstanding leader who exhibits passion for artistry with children, is an excellent musician, teacher and director and demonstrates strong communication and organizational skills. She/he will be visible in the music community. The Artistic Director is responsible for the development of the program’s long-range artistic programming and project development as well as the detailed planning of each season. The Artistic Director is an employee of the Board of Directors of the Cantilon Choral Society, reporting directly to the Board.
Responsibilities:
Artistic
Direct the Cantilon Chamber Choir in twice weekly rehearsals and all performances
Provide artistic direction and programming for all ten Cantilon Choirs, including but not limited to two annual concerts (Christmas, Spring). Developing themes for current concerts and long-term planning for future seasons
Work closely and regularly with artistic staff (currently four conductors, four accompanists)
Keep current with new treble choral repertoire
Be familiar with the Chamber Choir’s current repertoire, refreshing the repertoire of the full program and commissioning new repertoire for individual and/or massed choirs
Explore recording and touring options for the Cantilon Chamber Choir on a rotating cycle
Audition potential choristers, accompanists, soloists, guest artists and instrumentalists
Advocate on behalf of the choral program at community and cultural events
Plan and implement music education curriculum for the organization
Administrative
Attend and participate in all meetings of the Board of Directors, meeting with committees of the Board as required
Work closely and regularly with administrative staff (General Manager, Programs Co-ordinator, Graphic Design, Marketing)
Provide input for grant applications and fund-raising efforts
Represent and promote the Cantilon Choirs at music conventions, ACF, ACCC, ACDA, IFCM, Canada Council, etc.
Develop annual budget in concert with the General Manager and Board Treasurer
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a full-time position starting August 1, 2012. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Qualifications:
Experience for a minimum of 5 years in directing children/youth of many ages and experience levels
Minimum of a graduate degree in music or equivalent experience
Experience in specialized music teaching methods (i.e. Kodály, Orff, etc.)
Training and experience in applied vocal technique
Piano skills sufficient to support choral rehearsals
Familiarity with historical and current treble choral repertoire
Excellent interpersonal, networking and collaboration skills
Excellent verbal, written and computer skills

Shortlisted applicants will be given the opportunity to spend two days in Edmonton. During this time they will be asked to conduct a rehearsal of the Cantilon Chamber Choir and one of the training choirs as well as interview with search committee and artistic/administrative staff.

April 14 – 15, 2012
April 21 – 22, 2012
This is a one-year position, renewable annually.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
The Province of Saskatchewan and the City of Regina maintain vibrant choral environments made up of school, church and community choirs. The Department of Music at the University of Regina, a flexible, responsive and dynamic team of performers and scholars, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Choral Music at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2012. The successful candidate must hold a DMA or PhD in Music and have a proven track record as a choral conductor, preferably at the post-secondary level.
The successful candidate will: direct the University Concert Choir and the University Chamber Singers; establish and maintain local, national and international recognition as a choral conductor; teach courses in choral techniques and choral conducting; teach ear training and sight-singing courses. Other teaching responsibilities may be assigned according to the needs of the Department and the background and abilities of the candidate. The successful candidate will recruit, advise and retain students and, potentially, supervise graduate students in choral conducting.
