Homeless Awareness Week - Raise Your Voice: A Choral Benefit Concert

Some of Calgary's finest choirs join forces to raise awareness about homelessness in Calgary.
A newly commissioned work by Calgary composer Georgina Craig, scored for all 8 choirs involved in the concert, will be performed. Ensembles will include the Calgary Girls' Choir, the Calgary Men's Chorus, the Calgary Multicultural Choir, the Cantare Children's Choir, EnChor, Harmony Through Harmony, the Savridi Singers, and the Spiritus Chamber Choir. Spiritus Chamber Choir & Early Music Voices - Monteverdi Vespers

Grand in scale, Monteverdi’s masterpiece was the most ambitious and groundbreaking work of sacred music before the great passions of J.S. Bach. The music incorporates soloists and chorus with virtuosic instrumental writing. Monteverdi, a composer without peer, combines intimate prayerful moments with dramatic flourishes to create a masterpiece of spiritual and emotional depth. This is the first time this work is being mounted in Calgary with period instruments: cornetts, sackbuts, curtal, recorders, violone and theorbo – to name a few!

Pro Coro opens its 30th season with spectacular music for chamber choir, including Brahms' Zigeunerlieder, the first movement of Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Choir, and the Frank Martin Mass for Double Choir. The Schnittke is a stunning work, with influences from Rachmaninoff's beatiful Vespers and the Martin Mass, written in 1922, is recognized today as one of the great choral monuments of the 20th century. Conducted by Richard Sparks.
