Richard Eaton Singers, currently enjoying its 64th season, joyfully presentsVivera,a concert featuring compelling, well known choral works by Baroque Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi and the great Austrian Classical period composer Franz Schubert. This concert will again feature members of the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, together with the University of Alberta Madrigal Singers, and soloists Sarah Schaub, soprano; Mireille Rijavec, mezzo soprano; Jacques Arsenault, tenor; and Michael Kurschat, baritone. Richard Eaton Singers assistant conductor Sara Brooks will conduct this performance.

Luminous Voices | The Far West
Cathedral Church of the Redeemer (218 7 Avenue), CALGARY

Luminous Voices, Calgary’s professional choir, launches its 2014/15 season with a world premiere by Calgary composer Zachary Wadsworth. Praised for its “evocative mixture of old and new,” his music has been heard in venues around the world, from the Kennedy Center in Washington to Takinogawa Hall in Tokyo to Carnegie Hall in New York. Wadsworth’s new work will feature tenor soloist, American-Canadian Lawrence Wiliford, with string orchestra and choir. Commissioned by James and Elaine Hutchison, this powerful cantata addresses the AIDS crisis through poems of Tim Dlugos, who died of the disease in 1990 while studying to become a priest. Through this work, Luminous Voices honours those affected by AIDS, past, present and future. The concert also features Bach's famous Cantata No. 39 - Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot (Break your bread for the hungry). This work is a spellbinding example of Bach's genius in connecting music and text.

This all-Bach concert will present Motet No. 1 "Singet dem Herrn" andOrchestral Suite No. 1byJ.S. Bach, andMagnificatby CPE Bach. This concert features amazing vocal soloists Jonquil Koddo (soprano), Aoife Donnelly (mezzo-soprano), David Fertal (tenor), and Nicholas Allen (bass). The soloists, chorus, and orchestra will be directed by the Calgary Bach Society’s Artistic Director Terry Edwards. Calgary Bach Society’s 2014/15 season concerts will again be in support of the Calgary Food Bank. Admission to this concert will be in exchange for a cash or cheque donation at the door (donation receipts available). Greenwood Singers continues its 34-year tradition of exploring the varied facets of music for the Christmas Season with the 2014 edition of The Many Moods of Christmas.  From motets of Renaissance Europe to sparkling arrangement of beloved Christmas carols to favourite popular holiday songs, you won’t want to miss this annual musical celebration of Christmas.  The choir will be accompanied by pianist, Helen Stuart; organist, Marnie Giesbrecht; bassist, Jeff Johnson; and percussionist, Murray Smith.  The program will also include the lively music making of the University of Alberta Faculty of Education Handbell Ringers.

Each spring since 1981, Greenwood Singers has presented a program of choral music from Renaissance to Broadway.  The theme of the 2015 spring concert is Pastorale:  Music Inspired by Life in the Countryside.  The program will open with Italian and English pastoral madrigals extolling the beauty of life in the country and Zigeunerlieder, (Gypsy Songs) Op. 103 by Johannes Brahms with pianist Helen Stuart.  Ms. Stuart will also accompany the choir in Randall Thompson’s Frostiana (Seven Country Songs) on poems by Robert Frost.   The program will conclude with choral selections from the landmark Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma.
