Luminous Voices | The Far West
Cathedral Church of the Redeemer (218 7 Avenue), CALGARY

Luminous Voices, Calgary’s professional choir, launches its 2014/15 season with a world premiere by Calgary composer Zachary Wadsworth. Praised for its “evocative mixture of old and new,” his music has been heard in venues around the world, from the Kennedy Center in Washington to Takinogawa Hall in Tokyo to Carnegie Hall in New York. Wadsworth’s new work will feature tenor soloist, American-Canadian Lawrence Wiliford, with string orchestra and choir. Commissioned by James and Elaine Hutchison, this powerful cantata addresses the AIDS crisis through poems of Tim Dlugos, who died of the disease in 1990 while studying to become a priest. Through this work, Luminous Voices honours those affected by AIDS, past, present and future. The concert also features Bach's famous Cantata No. 39 - Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot (Break your bread for the hungry). This work is a spellbinding example of Bach's genius in connecting music and text.
