Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards
EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAM
The Emerging Artist awards program, which is presented in alternate years to the Foundation’s Distinguished Artist Awards, was established to recognize promising artists, early in their careers, no matter what age they may be. The applicants must have completed their training and should have achieved recognition by established artists in their specialty for a modest body of work. Applications from these emerging artists require appraisals by two peers from within the specialty.
All applications, together with the supporting materials and endorsements must be submitted to the Foundation office by the closing date of February 10, 2012. For the first time, applicants will have the option of completing their submissions on line through the Foundation’s web site. This option has been made available for the emerging artists, as many of the developing artists are completely at ease with this technology.
A panel of three adjudicators will review all applications and work with The Banff Centre in making recommendations to the Foundation Board. The final decision on the award recipients for 2012 will be made by the Foundation Board.
Up to ten awards of $10,000 each will be presented by the Lieutenant Governor at an awards ceremony in Government House in Edmonton next Spring.
Guidelines for the award applications are now posted on the Foundation’s website, www.artsawards.ca.
Da Capo Chamber Choir presents
NEW WORKS: A CANADIAN CHORAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION
The DaCapo Chamber Choir is excited to announce their 3rd annual, national choral composition competition, NewWorks.
The purpose of the NewWorks competition is to foster new and engaging choral works by Canadian composers. The DaCapo Chamber Choir was founded in 1998 and is dedicated to exploring unaccompanied music, primarily of the 20th Century and later. We are continually looking for new pieces to perform which will challenge us and our audiences - both musically and emotionally.
Da Capo Chamber Choir has been thrilled with the entries over the last two years; this November, the choir is performing last year’s winning entry, The Echo by Patrick Murray (Waterloo, ON) as well as a number of entries from the previous year. In March, Da Capo will be hosting a public workshop featuring three winners of our Young Composers Reading Sessions, where their compositions will be read by the choir. Composers will have opportunity to interact with the conductor and choristers in an effort to continue to refine their compositional craft.
The winning entry will receive a $1,500 cash award plus travel expenses to Kitchener to attend
the premiere of his/her composition by the DaCapo Chamber Choir, under director Leonard Enns, in the choir’s 2012/2013 season. Da Capp also invites young composers (aged 25 and younger) to submit compositions for consideration in our Young Composers Reading Sessions.
Entry deadline is February 13th, 2012.
Full information about the competition is available on our web site: www.dacapochamberchoir,ca/newworks .

Audition for the
NATIONAL YOUTH CHOIR OF CANADA
The National Youth Choir of Canada is a biennial project of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities.
Every two years, singers between the ages of 18 and 25 are auditioned across the country to form the National Youth Choir. Initiated in 1984, the choir has won critical acclaim across Canada since its inception. Some of the finest Canadian choral conductors have been invited to conduct the choir. The NYC has performed at all Podium conferences since 1984 and at the 1993 World Symposium on Choral Music in Vancouver. NYC concerts have been broadcast nationally on the CBC Stereo Network.
National Youth Choir 2012 will take place in Ontario (in conjunction with Podium 2012), 5-20 May 2012. The choir, consisting of a quartet of singers from every province in Canada, will gather for a week-long residency with guest conductor Ivars Taurins of the acclimed Tafelmusik Chamber Choir before embarking on a tour of the province of Ontario, culminating in a gala final performance at Podium 2012 in Ottawa.
If you are between the ages of 18 and 25 as of May 2012, you could be part of the National Youth Choir. All travel, accommodation and meal costs will be covered by the NYC organizing committee. Tuition fees will apply; some provinces may assess audition fees.
CHORALIES 2012
International Francophone Choir Festival
Choralies internationales 2012, planned for July of 2012 in Edmonton, will be a musical
and cultural event of international calibre. With more than a 1000 choristers coming from
France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, the Congo, Martinique, South America, the US,
Quebec and from across Canada, this festival will be one of the largest cultural gatherings
in the history of Western Canada. These major international festivals are almost always
held in Europe and very rarely in Canada. In 2012, it will be Edmonton's turn to host the
world. The festival's theme “Toi, moi, tout un monde! [You, Me, Quite a World!],” based on the piece of the same name by Edmonton composer France Levasseur-Ouimet, aptly
states the very inclusive, multicultural nature of this event.
Atlantic Voices Choral Composition Contest 2011
Atlantic Voices: The Newfoundland and Labrador Choir of Ottawa is a mixed-voice (SATB) community choir that sings music from and about Atlantic Canada. This is our second Choral Composition Contest, and the choir is looking for quality choral music with an East Coast flavour. We are offering two prizes, a 1st prize of $500 and a 2nd prize of $200, for original choral works by Canadian composers. The winning works will be programmed on Atlantic Voices’ spring 2012 concert. This competition is open to all residents of Canada, of all backgrounds and all ages. Note: the winning entrant need not have a particular connection to the Atlantic region.
More information about the competition.
